Sorry about the misconception here. I was going through the UI in my head.
So, browsing AAD directly for devices I see everything, including co managed:

But when looking at my user, I only see those device joined directly to AAD or registered with AD (Intune enrolled via Company Portal)

As to why it's made like this - I don't know, I believe I have read every co-management doc available, and to my knowledge it's not mentioned anywhere, but it's always been like this since day 1 of co-management
